Benefit Concert in Celebration of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Natural Areas
The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador announces the line-up for their 15th Annual Benefit Concert. This year the event will be held on Tuesday, November 16th, at 7:30pm at the LSPU Hall. A silent auction will also be held, beginning at 7:00pm.

Conservation Based Forest Management Receives Provincial Attention
The Sierra Club of Canada Forest Campaign hosted a 2 day strategizing meeting focusing on conservation-based forest management at Killdevil Camp and Conference Centre this past weekend, September 18-20. Conservationists from around the province as well as representatives from national organizations gathered to discuss current challenges, past successes and future goals for improving the management and preservation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s forests.

The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and the local Green Team will be holding an Open House in the Port Saunders Town Office on August 20, 2004, to present the preliminary results of our Northern Peninsula Community Values Mapping project.

Minister of Environment and Conservation presents donation to support creation of environmental centre
The Honourable Tom Osborne will present a donation today to the Protected Areas Association and the Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Network (NLEN) at the NLEN's Annual General Meeting. The donation will be used to support the creation of a center to house non-governmental environmental organizations. The NLEN and PAA gratefully acknowledge this support from the Department of Environment and Conservation.

The newly released Provincial Sustainable Forest Management Strategy has taken some small steps towards true sustainability but still has a way to go according to an environmental coalition.

Executive Director Wins Environmental Award
Congratulations to Protected Areas Association’s Executive Director, Laura Jackson, for receiving a Provincial Environment Award (individual category). Laura is a respected and effective voice for conservation of natural areas in the province and throughout Canada. The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards were announced on May 31, 2004 in St. John’s by Tom Osborne, Minister of Environment and Conservation, Shirley Fraize, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Women’s Institutes, and John Scott, Chairman and CEO of the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board.

Give Boreal Birds Something to Sing About: Environmental Art Competition Launched
The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador would like to invite students from grades 4-12 to participate in a province-wide environmental art competition with the theme Give Boreal Birds Something to Sing About. This competition is being launched on Earth Day April 22, 2004 and will extend until May 21, 2004.

Protected Areas Association Condemns Hunting of Threatened Caribou
The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador condemns the hunting of caribou in the threatened Red Wine herd, and urges Quebec Innu hunters involved in this illegal hunt to follow their traditional values of conservation and fairness with respect to the natural world.

The Little Grand Lake Ecological Reserve is finally near realization. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador now have an opportunity to ensure that this area, so critical to the endangered Newfoundland marten, is preserved. The reserve and the marten need our help.
